Early Childhood

Welcome to LSD's PreK Program!

Our Prekindergarten program serves deaf and hard of hearing students from the age of 3 to 5. We are a bimodal-bilingual (ASL and spoken English) program. Students are provided with opportunities to sign, listen, and talk in a variety of communicative contexts as well as opportunities to participate in activities designed to improve overall language development.

Our classes use the Creative Curriculum. The Creative Curriculum uses a whole-child approach to education. Children have opportunities to develop not only math and literacy skills, but also social–emotional, physical, and cognitive skills. Our students learn in a play-based, language-rich, and print-rich environment as they progress in all developmental areas.

For assessments, our teachers use Teaching Strategies GOLD to complete ongoing observational assessments for students from 3 years of age through kindergarten. The assessment is research-based and has 38 objectives that are predictors of school success and aligned to our state’s early learning standards. These scores are reported for IEP progress monitoring and to communicate with parents how their child is progressing in school.

Our PreK students also enjoy recess on our outdoor playground, PE times, snack, nap/rest time, and involvement in extracurricular activities such as school plays, elementary morning news, library visits, and holiday events. These events allow for lots of opportunities to interact with older peers and language models.
